"Driver 8" is a song by American rock band R.E.M., released in 1985 as the second single from their third studio album, Fables of the Reconstruction. The song was written by lead singer Michael Stipe and features a fast-paced, jangly guitar riff by guitarist Peter Buck.
The lyrics of "Driver 8" were inspired by Stipe's experiences traveling on trains as a child, and the title refers to the train-driving position known as "Driver Number 8." The song has been interpreted as a commentary on the decline of American small towns and the loss of rural jobs in the wake of industrialization.
"Driver 8" received positive reviews from critics and became one of R.E.M.'s most popular songs, although it did not chart highly on the Billboard Hot 100. The band played the song frequently on their tours and it remains a fan favorite to this day.
